From GenCircles lookup by suecase [edited]: Genealogical & Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey Vol 1 Pioneer ancestor of the Brokaw family Bourgon or Bergnon BROUCARD, French Huguenot, fled from religious persecution in France & found temporary refuge in Manheim, on the Rhine, in the Palatinate, asylum for the oppressed of many countries. Here he met & married Catherine Le Fevre, daughter of another French refugee. About 1675 ... emigrated to America & located on Long Island. Purchased a tract of land at Bushwick & resided there some years, but removed in 1688 to Dutch Kills, where he became a considerable land holder. One of the founders of the French Church of New York, took an active part in the affairs of his colony. Bourgon & Catherine had 8 children: Maria, Jane, Catherine, Isaac, John, Jacob, Peter & Abraham.

The NJ branch of the family write their surname Broka or Brockaer. BROULERT or BROUCHART, BOURGON, emigrated in 1675, & on ass. roll of Brn of 1676 & '89. This may be Broucard Bragaw.

European Origins of the Brokaw Family [by Dennis L. Brokaw, Sr. in collaboration with J. Russell Brokaw] This information does not much alter that already reported by H. Minot Pitman in the first installment of his report in The New York Genealogical & Biographical Record (1955, vol. 86) but it does put Pitman's data in the context of events in Europe & it does show that Bourgon Broucard was one of a larger family who had lived in the "Low Country" (an historical region roughly congruent with the late-medieval holdings of the Dukes of Burgundy & in modern times comprising parts of Belgium, the Netherlands, & northern France).
Presumably the ancestors of the Brokaw family ... moved from the Low Country to Mannheim over generations as the result of the Spanish incursion into the Low Countries in the earlier century. In the early 1650s much of Europe was just starting to recover from the effects of ... the Thirty Years War [in which] Mannheim was devastated.
...a Pierre Broucart is reported in the records of the Mannheim church at the baptism of his daughter, Catherine, on August 13, 1655, ...the records...support the notion that Bourgon Broucard & his wives, Marie du May & Catherine Le Febvre, were born in the Low Country.
Bourgon (spelled 'Gourgon') Broucard is recorded in his marriage with Marie du May (December 1, 1663) as "native of Moucron in the low country, Marie, as "native of Middlebourg in Zeeland". In 1666-- the Plague Year of Defoe which devastated London--the plague also visited Mannheim. It may be conjectured that the plague which decimated the Mannheim congregation also claimed Marie du May & daughter.
December 18, 1666, Bourgon remarried to...Catherine Le Febvre, listed in the marriage record as "native of Resterne in the low country".

Isaac, eldest son of Bourgon Broucard, stayed on Long Island...his descendents came to spell the name Bragaw. ...those who moved to New Jersey came to be known as Brokaw (and other variants).
