In the year 1684, Paulus Custer (Kuester) a farmer and mason by occupation, his wife Gertrrude Streypers (Doors) a native of Kaldenkirchen, in the Rheinland: with their children: Arnold, Hermanus, Johannes and Eliza, emigrated from Cerfeld, Germany, along with twenty eight other emigrant families from Cerfeld, and neighboring towns, and settled at Germantown, PA. These families formed the second colony who settled at Germantown. The first colony of thirteen families landed at Philadelphia, Oct 6, 1683. They were Mennonites and were under the leadership of Franz Daniel Pastorious, who was both their pastor and schoolteacher. Paulus Custer (Kuester) appears in a list of emigrants who left Crefeld for America in the year 1684, also in a tax list of heads of families residing in Germantown in 1693. 04 December 1704 he purchased 50 acres of land from Henry Buchholtz, and 05 Jan 1706 he was appointed overseer of fences for Germantown.

Paulus Kuster was born in 1644 in Kaldenkirchen, Germany. He married Gertrude Doors on October 16, 1668 in the Reformed Congregation in Kaldenkirchen. In 1684 Paulus and Gertrude with their children, Arnold, Hermanus, Hohannes and Eliza came to America. They came with 28 other emigrant families from Krefeld and settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania. They were the second group of Germans to settle in Germantown. Paulus was a stonemason and a farmer. His name appears on the taxroll of Germantown in 1693. On December 2, 1700 he was chosen a committeeman. He purchased 50 acres of land from Genny Bucholtz between 1689 and 1704. Paulus and Gertrude had ten children; Arnold, Johannes, Matthias, Reiner, Anna, Hermanus, Hermanus, (There were two baptisms for Hermanus Kuster in the records of the reformed Church in Kaldenkirchen. These two entries are on lthe same page of the church book and are in the same handwriting. It is assumed that the first Hermanus died in infancy.) Catrin, Eva and Margaret. Paulus' son Johannes was a constable in Germantown and was also a Burgess of Germantown in 1707. His son Arnold had a son named George that was an Indian trader and was killed by the Indians on November 1, 1755 near the Gap of the Blue Mountains which is now Carbon County.
