My Lewis Stanton was married there in 1798 to Elizabeth Smith. Am enclosing my notes and thoughts from my Stanton file. Please tell me your ideas on this info. Two heads are better than one. I'm hoping to find something on these other Stantons to link together. Seems very likely that Sally was a sister or cousin of Lewis. He was of age several years before his marriage. In 1796 the Fishing Creek district lists John Stanton with 1 free poll and William Stanton with 1 free poll. 1796 also lists in the Tarr River District Jacob Stanton with 1 free poll, Jacob Stanton ?SR with 480 A. and 2 slaves, and Abram Stanton with 150 A. and 1 free poll. 1797 taxables lists William Stanton in Fishing Creek with 1 free poll. 1797 lists in Epping Forest John Stanton with 1 free poll. 1798 lists, in addition to Lewis, John Stanton with 1 free poll. In 1803 and 1804 in the Fishing Creek district, John Stanton is listed with 1 free poll. TITL Tom Cain TITL LDS 1/2/96 REPO CALN MEDI Book TITL Cheryl Maples REPO CALN MEDI Book TITL Treva TreeshBuried May 2, 1850 in the Methodist Church Cemetery, five miles south of Potts Camp in Marshall County and about 1/4 mile above his old farm. Thomas Marion Harp was named in honor of General Frances Marion of Revolution fame. The census of 1820 of Overton County, Tennessee lists Thomas Harp as householder with 1 male, 16-26, and 1 female 16-26. Soon after their marriage they moved to Rhea County, Tennessee, that part that became Meigs County, Tennessee in 1836. It was on the Hiwassee River near Big Springs that nine of their fourteen children were born. The other five were born in Marshall County, Mississippi, about five miles southeast of Pott's Camp, Mississippi. They moved to Marshall County in 1838. Vital Statistics on file in Jackson, Mississippi, shows the cause of his death as "colds" and that he was ill for 17 days. The colds were undoubtedly pneumonia. He was short and red headed. (Allen Harp) $500 Received of Thomas M. Harp five hundred dollars in full consideration for a girl named Rachel about ten years old. I hereby in consideration of the above named sum of money sell and convey and deliver unto Prudence Harp wife of the said Thomas M. Harp all the rights and title of the said girl Rachel to be her right & property in the fullest extent during the natural life of widowhood should the said T. M. Harp die first and at her death or second marriage the rights and title of sd negro to go to the heirs of her body. I also warrant the sd girl Rachel to be sound & sensible and a Slave for life Given under my Hand & Seal this 20th day of August 1849 Test W. K. Walsh s & a A. J. Moore ---- Wm. S. Wisdom seel Comments: The above Bill of Sale evidently was made as a sort of assurance that the girl had been bought in case Thomas died, which he actually did in the following year. In the Court Recods of Rhea County, Tennessee, Page 149, Bill of Sale dated 16 September 1829 for a negro slave named Rachel was proven in court by Thomas M. Harp; judgment that said billbe certified for registration - August 1, 1831. There is a difference of twenty years between the two records. The writer remembers Rachel from his early school days. She seemed to have been 100 years old to my youthful mind. Rachel never took advantage of the Proclamation of Emancipation of Abraham Lincoln. She lived with Prudence Harp until she (Prudence) died in 1877, then she came under the care of America Harp, daughter of Prudence. Under that care Rachel lived until some time in the late 1890. As a school boy who walked within 10 feet of Rachel's little cabin twice a day we saw her most times sitting on the small proch in a raw hide seated chair smoking a clay pipe. We were in a manner afraid to linger around Rachel as she impressed me as being a witch. She sat puffing on the old clay pipe with a thin curl of smoke arising, looking as impassive as the Spinx of Egypt. She must have been at least 90 years old when whe died. Thornton Harp and Alvarine Harp were close to each other on the 1850 Overton County census, the 1860 Jackson County Census and the 1870 Monroe County, Kentucky Census. In the 1850 census Alvarine Harp was age 43, Nancy age 45, Rachael age 21, Daniel age 19, James age 16, William age 14, Calvin age 14, Ann age 12, Nancy age 10, George age 8, Tennessee 5 to 12 Overton County 252-170. On the 1860 census - Almarine (sic) was age 54, Nancy age 56, George 17, Nancy 20, Tennessee10, Burton 5 months Jackson County, Tennessee 72-225. In the 1840 census in Overton County, Tennessee Allmarine (sic) was age 30-40, wife 30-40. In the 1880 Monroe County, Kentucky census Almarine was age 88, Nancy age 88, daughter Tennessee T.
