By B.K. UPTGRAFFT 4/27/94: born near Netherlands border, a weaver of linen and merchant, born of Mennonite parents of Aldekiuk, 12 miles from Krefeld, Germany. They moved to Krefeld in 1609. Herman was one of the two delegates of the Krefeld Mennonite church to sign the Dordrecht Confession in 1632. There was, at one time, in the museum at Krefeld, Germany, window panes from the home of Herman OP DEN GRAEFF. The panes contained the date of 1630 along with his and the name of his wife. It is said that all of the UPTAGRAFFT's, UPDEGRAFFT's UPDEGRAVES, etc., with all the deviant spellings, all decended form Herman and Greitgen. Some say the family is French/German. The name, however, sounds most closely to Dutch/German. There is a Bible, printed in 1633, found by family researcher, Clyde Updegraff SHANK. Mr. SHANK placed (gave) this Bible to the York County, Pennsylvania, Historical Societey on 8/21/1957. Among the oldest Mennonites of Krefeld, Germany, the OP DEN GRAEFF family is one of the best known, since Hermann OP DEN GRAEFF was the first preacher of the Mennonite community who is known by name. He is believed to be from Aldekerk and became a burgher of Kempen in 1605, where he married Grietgen PLETGES that same year. In 1608, records show that he was in Krefeld, Germany, where he died in 1642. During the conference of leading Mennonites in Dordrecht, he and another delegate from Krefeld signed the 18 articles of their religious faith. Of his 18 children, his son Isaak, born 1616, in Krefeld, deserves to be mentioned because his wife Grietgen PETERS and her four children, Hermann, Derick, Abraham and Margrit are part of the group that emigrated in 1683 from Krefeld, Germany, to Germantown, Pennsylvania. The stained-glass window from the home of Herman OP DEN GRAEFF, mentioned earlier as being in the Kaiser-Wilhelm museum, Krefeld, Germany, has the following inscription on same, in German. Translated to English, it states: "God is fruitful, devout, and good to all sides, talked cheerfully and kind. I am Christian and appeal to the Lord. I bring affection, and one grants great honor to me. Hermen Op Den Graff and Greitgen his wife. anno 1630." (Note the changes in spelling of names, depending on the source of the information.)
