How To Make Custom Graphics for DooM

Making DooM graphics that look believable and appropriate to the game is very challenging, but the process of making them and placing them in your wads is not very complicated from a technical standpoint. This article explains all you need to know to pull it off.

You will need a good graphics program. Microsoft® Paint will not do, I'm afraid. I prefer Adobe Photoshop. I've also used Corel Draw, and it's good. The latest versions are expensive, of course, but you can find older versions much cheaper, and they're fine. It's helpful to have a scanner, although you can get by without one, especially if you have a digital camera.

For creating textures, the following pages will explain exactly what to do, step-by-step:

  1. Aquire some kind of source material
  2. Process the source material with your graphics program
  3. Crop the image to appropriate proportions
  4. Tile it, if necessary
  5. Reduce to the target size
  6. Convert the image to the DooM color palette
  7. Import the new image into your wad
