page 6c: FlutesFlutesFlutes, similarly, have no keys and are not likely of the transverse sort. They would be something like a six-holed flute or a recorder. Irish "tinwhistles" might make excellent Hobbit flutes, while recorders, with their heavier tone, might suit dwarf music better. I know of no reference to Elves playing flutes of any kind, though it seems unlikely that the most musically gifted of Middle-earth's peoples would have overlooked the simplest and most universal instrument type.
